What Insulation Resistance Tester features do I need?

Insulation resistance testing is vital for safety and is found in many devices, including:

  • Insulation testers
  • Continuity testers
  • Digital multimeters
  • Multifunction testers

Q: What features are required for my tester?

Most insulation testers offer resistance testing capabilities between 50V and 1000V. When selecting a tester, your decision will likely depend on both the price and a variety of electrical and mechanical features.

For instance, you might consider the hard screen cover and high IP rating of the Megger MIT320 as important. Alternatively, a backlit screen could be a crucial feature for your ideal insulation tester.

The entire Megger MIT300 series comes with a hard cover and high IP rating as standard.

What else can I use an insulation tester for?

Technical data sheets will provide the answer to this question. Knowing the technical specification of additional electrical tests will prove useful if your application includes continuity, frequency, capacitance and/or temperature measurements, or even diode testing.

Let’s not forget the analogue insulation tester… there’s still a market for this!

An analogue display can be invaluable, especially when it is just as important to observe changes in readings. The Megger 310A is now unfortunately obsolete. This unit allowed you to view the readings as they happen by observing the moving needle! As a replacement consider the Megger MIT220, this model has a ‘digital & arc’ display (as do all models from MIT200 series).

The Megger MIT200 series displays measurements up to 1000 MΩ on its combined analogue arc and a digital display.

What do I need for my job?

Let's summarise the applications for those well-known Fluke and Megger Insulation Resistance Testers:

Megger Insulation Testers:

  • Megger MIT200 series: Entry-level, insulation and continuity tests only
  • Megger MIT300 series: Extended test voltages, higher IP rating and more rugged construction than MIT200 series
  • Megger MIT400 series: Further functionality, aimed at industrial applications
