What features do I need on my insulation tester?

Insulation resistance testing is such an important measurement with safety being the main reason - so it's no surprise this testing functionally is built into a whole host of test equipment, from dedicated insulation testers, combined insulation and continuity testers, and digital multimeters… through to multifunction testers. So, you may ask the question: what features do I need on my insulation tester?

Firstly, it's good to know resistance testing capabilities on most testers range from 50V to 1000V. Therefore, your product selection will likely depend on price plus a number of electrical and mechanical features, for instance you may find the hard screen cover and high IP rating provided by the Megger MIT320 important; or a backlit screen may be an essential requirement for your ideal insulation tester.

*A hard cover and high IP rating comes as standard on the full Megger MIT300 Series.

What else can I use an insulation tester for?

Technical data sheets will provide the answer to this question. Knowing the technical specification of additional electrical tests will prove useful if your application includes continuity, frequency, capacitance and/or temperature measurements, or even diode testing.

Let’s not forget the analogue insulation tester… there’s still a market for this! When the ability to observe changes in readings is as important as the readings themselves this analogue display is invaluable. Megger 310A is a true analogue tester (the Megger MIT220 has a ‘digital & arc’ display, as do all models from MIT200 series).

Which insulation tester do I need for my job?

Let's look at the broad areas of use of the well known brands of Megger test equipment and Fluke test equipment and kits.

Megger Insulation Testers:

  • Megger MIT200 series: Entry-level, insulation and continuity tests only
  • Megger MIT300 series: Extended test voltages, higher IP rating and more rugged construction than MIT200 series
  • Megger MIT400 series: Further functionality, aimed at industrial applications
